circa: Late 1800's
A large painted papier mache and wooden tray from the Napoleon III period. Rectangular with rounded corners, the rim is curved up with no lip. The face of the tray is painted gold and has a large vignette in the center. Two maidens in classical robes are feeding and tending to some delicately painted birds, while a child holds out hay for a lamb. They are surrounded by flowering trees and bushes. The rim and back of the piece are painted black.
Condition: Good antique condition. Gilt loss and blemishes on the surface show the black ground color underneath, expected for its age and use.
