circa: 19th century
A fabulous 19th century French copper cauldron with repousse decoration and iron handle. This round pot likely spent much of its life hanging in a fireplace by its sturdy forged iron handle. The copper has a wonderful, bright patina on the outside and a rich, dark patina with some verdigris inside. A large band of stylized foliate motif repousse spans the top half of the cauldron, with a zigzag design below. Incised lines augment the repousse work. Stippled texture is impressed between the decoration. The raised edges that house the handle carry the same decorative embellishments. Three striking rustic patches are placed around the bottom rim of the pot. They are just beautiful in their wide toothed, hammered execution, and only give the cauldron more life.
Condition: Good rustic condition, with all the bumps and dents that you want in a 19th century copper pot. Some restorations at bottom part. Light patina on all surfaces, heavy patina and some verdigris on inside.
