circa: 19th Century
origin: Ardeche Region
A 19th century engraving of a woman in bed holding a child with a Louis XVI style gold leaf wooden frame. Crisp, black engraving with loads of texture by way of hatching and line work. The image is of a woman reclining in bed, holding up a swaddled puti, perhaps Cupid, a torch lying on the floor at her foot. This scene is framed with an oval decorated by copious flowers, all set against a rectangular backdrop. A placard runs the length along the bottom, covered in floral swag and at its center is a quiver full of arrows resting on a billowy cloud. The bottom left bears the artist's name, Fragonard. The print is mounted on a beige background and framed in gilt wood. The frame has light fluting decorated by repeating foliate motif and a scalloped interior profile.
Condition: Some age discoloration on wooden frame and back paper. Some small spots of foxing on the print.
