circa: Late 1800s
A fabulous pair of Italian painted and gilt altar candle holders turned into lamps, late 1800s. The tripod base has a scrolled profile with gilt acanthus feet, ribbed expanses and gilt acanthus detail matching the feet. Rising from the base is a baluster style column with round gilt segments containing water leaves, foliate motif, beading and twisted gadrooning, all interspersed with areas of lightly distressed cream paint. A five inch wax cylinder stands in for the candles that the pieces were originally made to hold. New 16" ecru linen drum shades. The lamps were recently rewired to US standards.
Condition: Very good condition. Age wear on wood with one crack. Some fading on the paint and gilt, typical for its age. Recently rewired.
