circa: Late 1800s
A remarkable French upholstered mahogany sofa in the Directoire style, circa 1890. The sofa has a square form with elegant, sloping arms that end in scrolled handrests. Exquisitely carved square balusters form the front legs, with multiple detailed segments. The back legs have a gentle outward curve; all legs rest on petite brass casters. Beautiful blonde mahogany has fine banded inlay throughout, with thin strips of ebony and satin wood. A wonderful stylized floral motif is inlaid on either side of the scrolled handrests. The square joins on the front legs have additional floral motif inlay of a different design, with details to create depth and shading on the petals. Dark taupe upholstery makes a perfect foil for the honey-toned wood. Double welt cord trim finishes out the piece. Very comfortable, upholstery is brand new. Seat height is 17.5".
Note: We have a matching pair of armchairs available, contact us for details.
Condition: Great condition. A few dings, marks and discoloration on wood, normal for its age and use. New upholstery.
