Two beautifully bound books containing the writings of Rabelais, in the French language, illustrated by Jules Garnier, published in 1897. Bound in red leather with burgundy, blue and ocher marbling on the covers, the pair is highly decorative. The tops of the pages are gilt, much of the page bottoms have attractive deckled edges. Rabelais was a 16th century author, Jules Garnier a 19th century painter. The first volume contains 94 full color detailed illustrations, the second volume has 66. E. Bernard in Paris is the publisher.
Condition: Generally good antique condition. Some darkening of the paper and wear on the outside, especially along the bottom edges, typical for their age and use.
